Stemming Out What Makes It Tick

My interest had been hurdling me toward stem cells recently. There would be three places where stem cells could be taken: embryonic stem cells which come from unborn children and the blood overflow from the umbilical cord; nose stem cells and bone marrow stem cells.

There were tests done in other countries that still allow research on stem cells, especially on regenerative therapy. Some of them were done placing nose stem cells on spinal cord injuries which left victims paralyzed, but by regenerating severed parts of the spinal cord patients had experienced significant results from the therapy. They could begin to feel, in a slow pace of a few months, pinpricks on their shoulders, especially for a particular patient who was quadruplegic.

A patient with severe heart damage had the help of bone marrow stem cells harvested from his own body and was distributed along the damaged area of his heart. There was significant progress for the patient afterwords, not denying the fact that recovery was slow, almost at the rate the human body wants us to face.

The controversy is quite hazy, especially for embryonic stem cells, since it is somehow the basis for the human lifeform. Yet, the medical breakthroughs stem cells had paved are also hard to ignore. A friend of mine, a biologist, said that there is a council that governs the ethics of which biological breakthroughs are weighed. Advantages and disadvantages would be assessed which would eventually lead to a decision that undoubtedly affect all of us in the future.
