I don't really find the political situation unnerving, disturbing and utterly distasteful--it's just the growing pains of a country coming to terms with political and moral/legal maturity and globalization. When I mean globalization, I don't only mean financial markets affecting one another across different countries although it does make a difference to our national economy even if some people still deny themselves this fact. There are global cable news agencies and the internet already in our midst for more than ten years. What I mean by globalization is the overall unity of the global community in almost all aspects of society we experience and would eventually turn into historical snippets recorded in books.
Take for example the battle of the tapes: Gloriagate vs. Erapgate. Well, it does have its suffix due to the Watergate scandal of then United States President Richard Nixon. I guess whoever wrote that suffix for the two tapes used to denote a presidential scandal with the same magnitude as what happened in the US during the 1960s.
However worldwide advancement of technologies had conjured up both the tapes, whether if they are fake or not, and these same advancements could put a stop to propaganda that had gone out to our newspapers, radio and television programs. You can't really blame the local media, its a good scoop. They know a good telenovela/novela when it happens and it would boost ratings. They just report it, as their job description requires them to do. The 6th Harry Potter book is doing good and producers tell their reporters to report on it.
What disturbs me is the sodden reactions of other people, some people, some people who are older and probably wiser than me, who should know better. My friend and I follow the news, listen to it and then filter the information. It is information. We have heard of the cliche, "Information is Power" but that's passe, a pun for the 90s when the internet needed a market. Knowing how to handle information is better, and then, to be philosophical about it, knowing how to handle power is power itself. I call it sobriety and maturity.
Its like a news report I just watched on TV about two brothers who didn't really quite see each other eye to eye. The older brother asked him to drink with him and they did and they talked about politics. The other was for resignation while the other was for impeachment, though it was not clear if he was for the rule of law to decide the President's fate. They had a heated debate over it and with the liquor making it difficult for them know better, one brother killed another. No one had their mean look in their eye or had to fight over a girl, they were intoxicated and immovable til one needed to have a knife in their stomach. It was not funny anymore.
We've heard of such bad images and some of us heat up and wish there was change. We've heard of corruption in the system and we all dream that the government would grow and take away the bad bananas behind. We've watched the legislative hearings at least once in our lives, whether they were senate hearings, committee hearings or executive sessions and we dream of having legislators as statespeople who thinks that the word "grandstand" would refer to that structure in Luneta. Some of us had heard the Gloriagate and Erapgate tapes and we dream that an unbiased unflinching sober Filipino expert would unravel the technical truth without being marginalized by black propaganda. We heard of cover ups sometimes made by politicians and we dream of having them tell the truth while the ordinary people would accept that truth with good.
Bonifacio, Rizal, and Mabini had the same dreams, except of course of the tapes. They had their children and their children had children, generations growing up and had never fully realized their dreams. These ordinary people also had a similar level stubbornness to realize a better tomorrow. To some, those dreams had turned into nightmares, calming alpha waves into disorted pictures in our brain when we are in dreamland. Nightmares in the human psyche are truly disturbing.
